Strengths and trade-offs

Strengths

  • Thrives as a scavenger at very low feed cost
  • Tolerates the full range of Pakistani conditions
  • Substantially more eggs than traditional desi birds

Trade-offs

  • Not broody, so you need an incubator or a desi hen to reproduce the flock
  • Still far below a commercial layer on output

In Pakistan

The backbone of Pakistan’s rural poultry improvement effort, and the subject of dedicated financing — ZTBL runs a loan product specifically for Golden/Misri farming. Backyard flocks produce 23.5% of the country’s eggs and 8.6% of its poultry meat.
