Includes a half-cycle allowance for birds lost to mortality — they eat before they die, and leaving that out is why hand estimates usually come up short.

Total feed is live weight sold × FCR. The part most hand estimates miss is the birds that die: they eat for part of the cycle and then produce no weight at all, so their feed has to be carried by the survivors.
This calculator charges roughly half a cycle’s intake for each bird lost. At 4% mortality that is a small correction; at 10% it is the difference between ordering enough feed and running out in the last week.
