What each input means
- Chicks placed
- How many day-old chicks went into the shed.
- Chick cost
- What you paid per chick, delivered.
- Mortality
- Percentage lost over the cycle. Breed standard is around 4.5%.
- FCR
- Feed conversion ratio — kg of feed per kg of live weight gained. Standard is about 1.62.
- Sale weight
- Average live weight per bird at sale.
- Feed price
- Per 50kg bag, delivered to the farm.
- Other costs
- Medicine, vaccination, fuel, electricity, labour and litter, per bird.
- Sale rate
- What the buyer pays per kg live weight.
How the maths works
Birds sold is chicks placed less mortality. Live weight is birds sold × average sale weight.
Feed cost is live weight × FCR, converted to 50kg bags and priced. This is the part most hand calculations get wrong — feed is bought per bag but consumed per kilo of gain, and FCR is the bridge between the two.
Cost per kg is total cost ÷ live weight, and it is the only number that matters at the moment of sale. Your break-even sale rate is exactly that figure: below it, the flock loses money no matter what the mandi is quoting.
