Why it is quoted per 1,000 chicks
Break-even is a rate, not a total — it does not change whether you place 5,000 birds or 50,000. Working per 1,000 keeps that obvious and makes the cost breakdown comparable between farms of different sizes.
The one input people underestimate is other costs. Medicine, vaccination, brooding fuel, electricity, labour and litter typically run PKR 18–28 a bird. Leaving them out understates break-even by around 10 rupees a kilo, which is often the whole margin.
